Breaking Matter: Vulnerabilities in the Matter Protocol

With over 15 billion connected devices globally, the attack surface has expanded dramatically, according to the 2024 IoT Security Landscape Report in collaboration with Netgear. As Internet of Things (IoT) devices become strongly anchored into the physical realm, malicious actors may alter environments (e.g., start boiler, open doors) by exploiting software vulnerabilities. Therefore, a more intensive research on IoT standards is required. Matter is an emerging standard aimed to provide secure connectivity for smart home and IoT. Because the Matter protocol itself was designed from the ground up with security and privacy in mind, it has not been sufficiently challenged yet, considering the scarcity of public reports on Matter-related security issues. Our research describes a new type of attack, namely the Delayed Denial of Service (DeeDoS), which gives an attacker, outside of a fabric, the ability to disable devices....
